West Bromwich’s landmark shopping and leisure destination celebrates its first anniversary this month.
New Square celebrates its first birthday in style after a successful year in which nearly 5 million people visited the shopping centre. Other highlights from the year include:
- The creation of 2000 jobs for the people of West Bromwich.
- An increase of footfall month on month with record footfall in May of 495,000.
- 85% of the 473,000 square feet of floor space is let and trading.
- A series of free events that have entertained and captured the community spirit of West Bromwich.
- Latest additions including the Post Office and Lloyds Pharmacy with a further four new tenants expected in coming months.
New Square marked its milestone in true party style with a two-day Caribbean carnival featuring lively calypso bands, colorful carnival dancers, tasty Caribbean food and limbo dancing workshops. The family fun began on Friday 11 July.
The £140 million New Square retail and leisure development opened on 11 July 2013.
Measuring 473,000 sq. ft., the complex features a six-screen Odeon cinema, a number of high street fashion brands such as Primark, Next, River Island, H&M, Blue Inc, Bank, Outfit and Deichmann, and a choice of restaurants and cafes including Prezzo, Harvester, Costa and Nando’s.
New Square has created over 2000 jobs in the region and added 14 store openings since July last year with recent newcomers including the Post Office and Lloyds Pharmacy.
The development also provides a focus point for the community bringing free family-led activities to the heart of the town centre. Activities in the past year include a children’s petting zoo, Ranger Rob and his creepy crawly friends, Father Christmas and his reindeer and a climbing wall.
New Square is looking to the future with four new tenants expected to be announced in the next few months including the Entertainer who are planned to open in the first week of August.
Centre Manager, Steve Burr said: “We are extremely happy with footfall and the way that the center is trading, with more new stores coming soon we look forward to seeing the centre continue to grow over the coming months.”
“New Square has been a bit hit with the people of West Bromwich, who see it more than just a shopping experience, but a place to relax, meet friends and socialise.
“A big part of our success is the strength of brands, they are clearly what people want and we will continue to attract big household names to the area. New Square has brought another dimension to the heart of West Bromwich and shoppers have more choice than ever.”
